Christian Eriksen scored for Denmark in their Euro 2024 opener, exactly 1,100 days after suffering a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020. The Manchester United star, 32, netted in the 17th minute against Slovenia, slotting the ball past goalkeeper Jan Oblak. Eriksen’s journey back to the pitch has been remarkable.
On June 12, 2021, Eriksen collapsed during Denmark’s match against Finland. He received CPR on the field and later revealed, “I was gone from this world for five minutes.” After being fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator, he returned to professional football with Brentford in 2022 before joining Manchester United.
Eriksen made an emotional return to international football in March 2022 and featured in the World Cup later that year. Against Slovenia, he marked his first European Championship appearance since his cardiac arrest with a heartwarming goal, chesting down Jonas Wind’s flick and finishing with the outside of his boot. The goal brought fans and viewers to tears, celebrating Eriksen’s incredible comeback.
It just had to be him!
