Koeman led Barcelona for 14 months until his dismissal in October 2021, when Xavi took over. Since then, Koeman has frequently spoken about his tenure, once remarking that he could chronicle a book with all that unfolded during his tenure. Recently, Koeman criticized his former club again, highlighting the lack of progress under Xavi and emphasizing that he did not receive the same backing from club president Joan Laporta as Xavi did.

In an interview with El Mundo, Koeman stated, “Yes, I already said it. I did not receive the same support from the president as Xavi received. At that moment they fired me I think we were nine points behind Madrid. And now they are down to ten. To be successful you have to have the support of the president.”

After Koeman’s departure, Xavi went on to secure the league title and the Spanish Super Cup, while also nurturing promising talents such as Lamine Yamal and Fermin Lopez. However, Xavi left his managerial role abruptly after two and a half seasons amid tumultuous circumstances, making way for Hansi Flick, the former Bayern Munich and Germany manager.

Flick’s objective is to restore Barcelona’s trophy-winning tradition following a season without silverware in 2023-24. Nevertheless, Flick assumes leadership at a time when Barcelona continues to grapple with financial challenges, which have led to the inability to register nine first-team players for the upcoming season. Meanwhile, bitter rivals Real Madrid have capitalized on their recent successes in La Liga and the Champions League, culminating in the signing of PSG star Kylian Mbappe.
