Marcus Rashford was among several notable omissions from the England squad selected for the European Championship. The Manchester United forward had an underwhelming season and, with England manager Gareth Southgate selecting players based on current form, Rashford’s exclusion was anticipated. However, his former teammate Phil Jones believes Rashford still deserved a spot in the squad.

In an interview with Ladbrokes 1-2-Free, Jones commented: “Rashford is the one I would identify as the biggest decision. It’s a tough call, and I’m not saying it’s the right or wrong call.”

“Marcus, even after a disappointing season, has the capability to produce something extraordinary. Knowing him as both a person and a player, I believe he could have contributed, especially in challenging matches where we struggle to break down defenses.

“I always think Marcus – even if he’s not had the season he’d have liked – has the ability to do something special. I know him as a person, and as a player, and I think he could have certainly offered something, especially in games where we’re struggling to break teams down.”

Rashford isn’t the only surprising exclusion. Manchester City’s Jack Grealish and Spurs’ James Maddison were also left out of the provisional squad. Grealish’s omission even surprised the German squad, who regard the City star as more dangerous than Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze.

Linked with a potential move away from Old Trafford, Rashford aims to recover from a challenging season. He will have to watch as his England teammates compete in Germany, starting their Euro 2024 campaign against Serbia on June 16.
