Maddison has left the England camp after being informed by Southgate that he will not be part of the final squad for Euro 2024. The Tottenham star, who was among the 33 players on the provisional list, played as a second-half substitute against Bosnia on Monday night but has now been released.
Maddison had a strong start with Tottenham following his summer move from Leicester, but an ankle injury sidelined him for two months. Although he couldn’t maintain his early-season form upon his return, he still hoped to make the squad for the tournament in Germany.
On X, Maddison posted: “Devastated doesn’t quite cut it. Trained well and worked hard all week but if I’m honest with myself, my form for Spurs when coming back from injury in the second half of the season probably wasn’t at the levels I had set which gave Gareth a decision to make. I still thought there would be a space for me in a 26 man squad as I feel I bring something different & had been a mainstay in this whole qualifying campaign for Euro 2024 in Germany but the manager has made the decision and I have to respect that. I’ll be back, I have no doubt. Wishing the boys all the luck in the world out in Germany, unbelievable group and lads that I literally call some of my best friends. I genuinely hope football comes home.”
Southgate has also excluded Curtis Jones from the squad and must inform five more players of their exclusion before Friday’s deadline. Manchester United defender Harry Maguire is a possible candidate due to his ongoing injury issues, while Jack Grealish is also rumored to miss out. England’s final friendly match is on Friday against Iceland at Wembley Stadium.
