Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has missed out on a return to football management, with former Arsenal and Barcelona star Giovanni van Bronckhorst being appointed as Besiktas’ new manager. Solskjaer, who hasn’t managed since being sacked as Manchester United boss in November 2021, was previously linked with the Besiktas role.

This move would have reignited his rivalry with Jose Mourinho, recently announced as Fenerbahce’s manager.Van Bronckhorst, who managed Rangers between 2021 and 2022 and had spells at Feyenoord and Chinese club Guangzhou, now faces the challenge of restoring Besiktas to their former glory. The Turkish club finished 46 points behind league winners Galatasaray last season and has been without a permanent manager since sacking Fernando Santos in April.

Solskjaer, who led United to consecutive top-four finishes and reached the Europa League final in the 2020-21 season, was contacted about the Besiktas role while Santos was still in charge. Speaking on Gary Neville’s “Stick to Football” podcast in March, Solskjaer revealed he had turned down several management offers as he considered his next move. Besiktas last won the Turkish title in 2021.
