Luke Shaw’s recovery progress spurs optimism for England for upcoming Euro 2024

Shaw's absence due to injury has left a void in England's squad, with contingency plans in place for his potential replacement by Trippier or Gomez.

Shaw has been out of action since February due to a hamstring injury, leaving a notable gap in the Three Lions squad as he’s the sole natural left-back in Southgate’s initial 33-man selection.

As reported by The Telegraph, Shaw has resumed partial group training while also adhering to a personalized individual program focused on expediting his full recovery.

Despite uncertainty surrounding Shaw’s readiness for the tournament kickoff, Southgate has devised backup plans. Kieran Trippier, primarily a right-back, stands poised to deputize at left-back if Shaw fails to regain fitness before the opener against Serbia on June 16. Joe Gomez is also in contention for the left-back role in England’s final friendly against Iceland.

Southgate faces various dilemmas as he finalizes the squad. One such dilemma concerns striker Ivan Toney, who has been assured playing time against Iceland. Toney’s absence in the recent win over Bosnia and Herzegovina has heightened speculation regarding his inclusion in the final squad, making his performance against Iceland crucial in determining his fate. Conversely, Jack Grealish, instrumental in setting up Trent Alexander-Arnold and contributing to Harry Kane’s goal against Bosnia, remains hopeful about securing a spot in the final squad.

With the June 7 deadline for squad submission approaching, the upcoming friendly against Iceland on Friday holds significant importance in shaping the final roster. Shaw’s recovery progress, alongside decisions involving Toney and Grealish, will dominate discussions. All eyes will be on Southgate come June 7!
