The Football Association (FA) has leveled accusations against the Brazilian international, alleging his deliberate booking in four Premier League matches. This controversy emerged after West Ham’s season opener against Bournemouth, where Paqueta received a booking in the 93rd minute, prompting suspicions and triggering an FA inquiry.

As reported by The Sun, Paqueta purportedly approached West Ham manager David Moyes, expressing his desire to be omitted from the game to mitigate any potential injury risks that could jeopardize his transfer to Manchester City. Despite this plea, he ultimately agreed to participate after discussions with Moyes and other senior figures at the club. Throughout the match, Paqueta displayed visible anxiety, frequently glancing towards the touchline from the 70th minute onwards, seemingly indicating a desire to be substituted.

Moyes had allegedly intended to substitute Paqueta in the second half to reduce the risk of injury. However, Paqueta remained on the field until late into added time when he received a contentious booking for handball, a pivotal moment in the FA’s investigation.

Paqueta’s legal team is preparing a robust defense, aiming to challenge the FA’s allegations. They contend that the timing of Paqueta’s yellow card in added time is inconsistent with a deliberate attempt to influence betting outcomes. Furthermore, his initial reluctance to participate in the match is cited as evidence of his lack of intent to engage in any betting scheme. If found guilty, Paqueta could face a ban of up to ten years, effectively ending his professional football career.

It is anticipated that Paqueta’s case will be adjudicated by a three-person independent commission later this summer. The outcome of this hearing will not only determine his footballing future but also establish a precedent for handling similar cases within the sport. Despite the accusations, Paqueta remains steadfast in his defense, hopeful that the truth will ultimately clear his name.
