Sampdoria defender Cristiano Piccini recently disclosed that he underwent an assault and robbery by two fellow Italians while vacationing in Ibiza this week.

The 31-year-old central defender, who joined Andrea Pirlo’s team on a free transfer from FC Magdeburg in January, signed a six-month contract in Liguria. Despite missing some matches due to a hamstring injury, he managed to make 11 appearances for Sampdoria.

Under Pirlo’s management, Sampdoria struggled to perform their best in Serie B this season, exiting the playoffs after a 2-0 defeat to Palermo, backed by the City Group, last month. Pirlo is anticipated to continue leading the team into the upcoming 2024-25 season.

Piccini took to Instagram to recount his harrowing experience of being attacked and robbed in Ibiza. He accused two unidentified Italians of perpetrating the violent act and cautioned followers about visiting the island.

In his Instagram post, Piccini detailed the assault, stating that he was ambushed by two individuals near the Ibiza Gran Hotel. Despite his attempts to resist, they managed to steal his watch. Although he and his family emerged physically unscathed, Piccini expressed frustration over the prevalence of such incidents on the island.

Following some backlash, Piccini issued an apology for implicating individuals from Napoli in his account of the incident. He clarified that he did not intend to generalize or offend the Neapolitan people, acknowledging the diverse and respectful nature of many Neapolitans whom he holds in high regard.
