Despite facing multiple injuries throughout the season, Shaw’s participation in the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament for England hangs in the balance. The left-back has been out of action since sustaining a significant injury setback in February during a game against Luton Town, marking the second major setback of his season after a previous muscle injury limited his appearances.
During the 2023-24 season, Shaw only managed to play in 12 Premier League matches under manager Erik ten Hag. Despite these challenges, he was named in England’s preliminary squad for Euro 2024 with hopes that he could recover in time before the tournament begins on June 7.
Following Manchester United’s 2-1 FA Cup final victory against Manchester City, Shaw took to Instagram to share his sentiments and provide an update on his injury status. He expressed happiness for his teammates’ success while acknowledging his frustration at being unable to contribute due to his injuries. Shaw also addressed criticisms regarding his loyalty to the club and his fitness for England versus United, emphasizing his dedication to both but admitting he is not yet fully fit for either.
England manager Gareth Southgate has acknowledged the difficulties Shaw faces in securing a place in the Euro 2024 squad. Despite including him in the provisional squad, Southgate described Shaw’s chances of playing in Germany as slim due to his prolonged absence from competitive matches.
“He’s up against it,” Southgate remarked. “He’s missed a lot of football. The fact he’s been our first choice in that position means we’re giving him a bit longer than we might have done and I’m not sure what’s realistic at this moment in time.”
For Shaw, the immediate priority is to regain full fitness, hoping that his dedication will earn him a place in the final England squad for the summer tournament.
