Philippe Coutinho is close to leaving Aston Villa, with Brazilian club Vasco da Gama confident of securing his return after advanced talks. The 31-year-old playmaker has struggled to make an impact at Villa Park since arriving from Barcelona. Coutinho, who has flown back to Brazil, hinted to local media about his imminent move.

Signed by Steven Gerrard in 2022, Coutinho was seen as a potential game-changer but has managed only six goals and three assists in 43 appearances for the Villans. Once valued among the world’s best, his career declined after a £142 million move from Liverpool to Barcelona. Last season, he was on loan at Al-Duhail in Qatar, but they opted not to make the move permanent.

A return to Vasco da Gama, where Coutinho started his career before moving to Inter Milan in 2008, would be a significant boost for the struggling club. Reports suggest that Aston Villa’s owners are interested in acquiring Vasco to expand their V Sports portfolio. Villa, despite a forthcoming Champions League payday, plans to sell at least one-star player this summer due to financial pressures.
