Wayne Rooney is reportedly close to returning to management with Plymouth Argyle. The former England star was last at Birmingham, where he was sacked in January after winning just two of 15 games. Despite his tough stint, Rooney is set for a comeback with Plymouth, who narrowly avoided relegation from the Championship on the last day of the season.

Plymouth is seeking a new boss following Ian Foster’s sacking. According to The Telegraph, Plymouth chief Neil Dewsnip, who knew Rooney from their time at Everton, is driving the interest. Although talks have not yet occurred, Rooney is under serious consideration. Rooney, who has also managed Derby and DC United, is set for a busy summer with a punditry role at the BBC for Euro 2024. However, he has expressed a strong desire to return to management, saying, “I definitely want to get back into management. It was a setback what happened at Birmingham but I’m a fighter and I want to get back into it.”

Plymouth has also been linked with former Hull boss Liam Rosenior and Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom. Rosenior reportedly turned down the move, while Heckingbottom has held talks with Argyle.
