Newcastle United are reportedly planning a summer swoop for Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. Eddie Howe, a “big fan” of the 23-year-old Georgian, has had the club repeatedly watch him in La Liga action. Standing at 6ft 6in, Mamardashvili has emerged as Newcastle’s top target and is expected to cost around £35 million. Despite the significant funds available from their Saudi owners, Newcastle’s spending has been limited by the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Mamardashvili, who joined Valencia in 2021 and won their player of the year award in 2023, is reportedly open to a Premier League move. Howe’s priority is to sign a young goalkeeper to challenge current No.1 Nick Pope, especially after Martin Dubravka’s 27-game deputation due to Pope’s dislocated shoulder. Dubravka and third-choice Loris Karius will become free agents next month. Newcastle plans to spend significantly this summer, financed by the sale of players like Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson.

Additionally, Arsenal have reportedly contacted Bruno Guimaraes’ camp over a potential transfer, with his contract featuring a £100 million release clause active in June. Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly is expected to join Newcastle on a free transfer once his contract expires. Howe emphasized the club’s commitment to improving the squad while navigating financial restrictions, stating the need for smart and reactive trading in a challenging market.
