Former Leicester City Women’s Super League manager Willie Kirk has broken his silence following his sacking by the club six weeks ago. Kirk was dismissed after it was revealed he had a relationship with a player, leading to allegations of gross misconduct. Kirk, who had joined Leicester in July 2022, explained that he and his wife had been separated for over a year.

He described the situation as a personal matter and expressed frustration at being portrayed negatively. “The relationship was something that developed over time,” Kirk stated. “I tried to maintain professionalism, but emotions got the better of me.” The affair reportedly began when the player contacted Kirk outside of work to express her feelings. Kirk stated that he initially rejected her advances and emphasized the club’s code of conduct. However, the relationship developed after the player suffered an injury and they began meeting outside of work.

“I made a mistake,” Kirk admitted. “But I believe the club could have handled the situation better. I feel let down by their approach.” Despite his regret over the impact of his actions, Kirk acknowledged that he should have acted differently. He expressed remorse for the situation and its consequences.
