Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has elaborated on why the Gunners chose to extend Jorginho’s contract, citing the Italian midfielder’s exemplary leadership qualities and his distinctive style of play.

The announcement of Jorginho’s contract extension was made by Arsenal via an official statement on Thursday, securing his presence at the Emirates Stadium until June 2025.

“We’re delighted that Jorgi has signed a new contract with us. Jorgi is such an important part of our team, a role model with great leadership skills and a unique playing style ability which makes everybody better around him on the pitch,” remarked Arteta in an interview with the club’s official website.

Expressing satisfaction at Jorginho’s decision to remain with the team, Arteta added, “We’re very pleased that Jorgi and his family have committed with us and we’re all excited to continue this journey together.”

Furthermore, Arteta emphasized Jorginho’s embodiment of Arsenal’s values, stating, “We’re very happy to have Jorgi sign a contract extension with us. He represents what we stand for here at Arsenal with his professionalism and success.”

Arteta conveyed his belief that Jorginho’s continued presence would not only be welcomed by players and coaching staff but also by all the personnel working behind the scenes at Arsenal, emphasizing the collective excitement for the future.

Jorginho has progressively secured a more regular spot in Arsenal’s starting lineup, featuring in 35 matches across all competitions this season, despite starting only four Premier League games out of the initial 20.

Initially facing limited playing time at the start of the campaign, Jorginho’s situation led Italy coach Luciano Spalletti to exclude him from the national squad for his initial four games in charge. However, a notable improvement in Jorginho’s involvement saw him start in three out of the last four matches under Spalletti, positioning him as a potential inclusion in Italy’s squad for Euro 2024.
