In February 2023, the triumphant 2023 treble champions faced a staggering blow: the Premier League slapped them with over 100 financial fair play charges dating back to the period between 2009 and 2018. A panel independent of the league is scheduled to convene later this year to deliberate on the matter. However, a final decision might not materialize until the subsequent year, prolonging the uncertainty shrouding City’s destiny.

This delay purportedly ignited frustration among rival clubs, particularly Everton and Nottingham Forest, both of whom have already suffered point deductions for violating profitability and sustainability regulations this season. Rio Ferdinand speculated that the repercussions would be immense if City emerged unscathed or with only a minor penalty.

Expressing impatience on his FIVE podcast, Ferdinand queried, “When is this going to get sorted out? Because everybody else’s cases seem to be getting sorted out mighty, mighty quick. Everton have had two dockings this season already this season. Nottingham Forest, all these teams are getting docked points. Manchester City’s are just… [pretends to thumb through pages].”

He added, “If I was those clubs, I’d be like, ‘let’s see what happens with City first’. But if they get nothing or a little slap on the list, I can see them going nuts. When I went to a court case about racism a few months ago, he had one charge. It took two-and-a-half years! They’ve got 115, it’s nuts!”

The gravity of the charges has ignited speculation about the potential severity of the penalties awaiting City. Speculations range from significant point deductions to the possibility of losing titles, with relegation even floated as a potential consequence.

Premier League CEO Richard Masters disclosed that the trial date for City has been set during the European League general assembly but refrained from divulging further details.

“Obviously we can’t comment on the case, the date has been set and the case will resolve itself at some point in the near future, and I cannot make any further comment on it,” he stated.

Despite the looming legal battle, City is on the brink of clinching another Premier League title and is poised to face Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday.
