Musiala, originally from Stuttgart, Germany, spent his formative years in London until he was 16 before joining Bayern Munich. Having dual eligibility, he could have chosen to represent either England or Germany. After playing for England at youth levels, he opted for Germany in 2021. Harry Kane, his Bayern teammate, jokingly remarked to ITV Football that had they met earlier, he might have persuaded Musiala to choose England.
Kane quipped, “I joke a bit with Jamal Musiala about him choosing Germany over England. Obviously he could have played for England. But maybe if I were here a few years ago, I could’ve put my arm around his shoulder and got him for us. But Jamal is a great player.”
Although Kane’s remarks were in jest, it’s understandable why Musiala opted for Germany. Having lived and played there since 2019, he’s familiar with the environment. Additionally, Germany boasts an impressive tournament history with five World Cup victories and three Euros triumphs.
Musiala’s decision places him on the team that seems slightly weaker for Euro 2024. While England enters as tournament favorites, Germany possesses considerable talent and hopes the home advantage will play a role. The European Championship is scheduled to commence on June 14th.
