La Gazzetta dello Sport has reported that Milan is conducting “financial assessments” regarding Roberto De Zerbi, who currently has a €15m release clause with Brighton. The Italian coach is said to be tempted by the prospect of returning to the club.

De Zerbi, the coach of Brighton, has emerged as one of the potential candidates to replace Stefano Pioli at Milan next season.

According to Gazzetta, fan protests have led the club to reconsider Julen Lopetegui, but Milan is already in contact with five other potential candidates.

Although De Zerbi is not currently among those candidates, reports suggest that the Serie A giants are contemplating a reunion with their former academy product.

Gazzetta states that De Zerbi’s track record in nurturing young talent and his attractive style of play make him a strong contender for the position. However, Milan’s directors are also conducting financial evaluations.

De Zerbi is under contract with Brighton until June 2026, with the aforementioned €15m release clause, which was previously reported at €13m by other sources.

If Milan decides to pursue De Zerbi, they may need to negotiate to reduce the coach’s transfer fee, as suggested by Gazzetta. The paper hints that Brighton could be open to listening to Milan’s proposals.

Nevertheless, it’s worth noting that Brighton’s CEO, Paul Barber, recently expressed the club’s intention to offer De Zerbi an appealing package to encourage him to stay beyond the summer.
