Reports from Holland suggest that former Arsenal and Manchester United striker Robin van Persie is on the verge of securing his first managerial role, with Eredivisie side Heerenveen. The 40-year-old, currently coaching Feyenoord’s U18s, looks set to take over at Heerenveen next season.

Heerenveen had initially targeted former Ajax boss Maurice Steijn before turning their attention to Van Persie. His agent reportedly contacted the club to express Van Persie’s interest in the vacant managerial position. Van Persie’s interview with the club went well, and an announcement is expected soon. This move comes after Heerenveen announced the departure of manager Kees van Wonderen at the end of the season. While Feyenoord had hoped Van Persie would make the step up to coaching their U21s, he has shown ambition in seeking a first-team managerial role.

Van Persie, who is close to qualifying for his UEFA coaching license, has had a successful playing career, notably with Arsenal and Manchester United in the Premier League. He scored 144 goals in 280 appearances and won the Golden Boot in consecutive seasons. His final meeting with Heerenveen’s sporting director will determine his budget and coaching staff for the upcoming season.
