Vitesse, a club with a 35-year history in the Dutch top flight, has been relegated from the Eredivisie after being handed an 18-point deduction. The club is accused of providing incorrect information to investigators and withholding important information related to potential violations of sanctions and the assessment of the club’s continued existence.

Despite submitting a restructuring plan to the Dutch FA, it has not been accepted. The 18-point deduction has placed Vitesse at the bottom of the Eredivisie on -1 points with just four games remaining. This punishment comes as a major blow, as the club was already seven points adrift of escaping the automatic relegation spots. Interim general manager Edwin Reijntjes acknowledged that the punishment was “inevitable” but expressed gratitude for the opportunity to retain the club’s license, which was also in jeopardy.

Vitesse has decided not to appeal against the licensing committee’s decision. This relegation marks a significant downturn for the club, especially considering their recent successes, including a successful loan spell by Mason Mount in 2016.
