Stefano Pioli, the coach of Milan, has confirmed that Malick Thiaw won’t be able to play against Lecce tomorrow. However, he remains hopeful that the German center-back will be back in action for the match against Roma on Thursday, especially since Fikayo Tomori will be suspended for that game.

Milan is gearing up to face Lecce at the Stadio Meazza on Saturday, just ahead of the Europa League quarter-finals against Roma, which will also be held at San Siro five days later.

Thiaw had to be substituted during halftime in Milan’s recent 2-1 victory over Fiorentina on Sunday and will consequently miss the upcoming home game.

Pioli explained during a press conference that Thiaw’s absence is not just for tomorrow’s match but is also influenced by the upcoming fixture on Thursday. Thiaw has been dealing with inflammation from plantar fasciitis, which has affected his training sessions. As a precaution, he won’t be included in the squad for the Lecce game, but there’s optimism about his availability for Thursday, especially given the absence of Tomori and Pierre Kalulu.

With Ruben Loftus-Cheek suspended against Lecce, Pioli was asked about the possibility of Ismael Bennacer playing as an attacking midfielder tomorrow. Pioli confirmed that Bennacer could indeed fill in for Loftus-Cheek. Although Bennacer had missed some training sessions due to illness, he and some of his teammates are capable of playing in that position.

During Milan’s recent win in Florence, Tijjani Reijnders often drifted towards the left wing. Pioli commented that Reijnders has frequently played on the left, depending on Rafael Leao’s defensive positioning. Pioli emphasized the quality of players like Leao, Theo, and Reijnders, expressing confidence in their ability to create dangerous situations. He highlighted the importance of utilizing each player’s strengths to maintain the right balance in the team.

Milan has been enjoying a successful run in Serie A, winning four consecutive matches and remaining unbeaten in league games since suffering a loss against Monza on February 18. They currently hold the second position in the Serie A table, trailing leaders Inter by 14 points and sitting six points above third-placed Juventus.
