Unveiling the reasons behind Getafe’s partial stadium ban

Getafe, a Madrid-based club, has been fined €27,000 and ordered to close part of their stadium for three La Liga games due to racial and xenophobic abuse aimed at Sevilla's coach and player during a recent match.

The Madrid-based club has been fined €27,000 and ordered to close off a section of their central stand for the next three La Liga games, as decreed by the Spanish football governing body. This penalty stems from incidents of racial and xenophobic abuse directed towards Sevilla coach Quique Sanchez Flores and player Marcos Acuna during a recent match in La Liga. Referee Iglesias Villanueva halted the game in the second half, adhering to the league’s anti-racism protocol, following insults aimed at the defender and coach.

Spanish football authorities have adopted a more stringent approach towards combating racism, prompted by numerous high-profile occurrences. Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior has been outspoken in criticizing the inadequate response to this issue in Spain, having been subjected to abuse himself on multiple occasions.

Sevilla manager Sanchez Florez expressed dismay at the insults hurled during the match, emphasizing the need for respect in the workplace, stating, “I don’t want people to use the word gypsy as a racist insult. Some of the crowd think they can come to a game and say whatever they like. We’re workers who need to be respected in the work space. I think it’s abhorrent.”

Getafe, currently positioned 11th in La Liga and maintaining a slim chance of European qualification with Greenwood, on loan from Manchester United, leading their charge, will witness a reduction in stadium capacity for their upcoming home matches. However, their immediate fixture is an away game against Rayo Vallecano on April 13, before they return home to face Real Sociedad on April 21.
