Arsenal are considering a move for Joao Cancelo if Barcelona fail to secure his permanent transfer from Manchester City. The 29-year-old full-back, who has three years left on his City contract, has been on loan at Barcelona for 14 months following a fallout with Pep Guardiola.

Despite being a regular for Barcelona, the club is reluctant to meet City’s £40 million asking price. This has alerted Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who values Cancelo’s versatility to play on either flank and even in midfield. Cancelo has expressed a desire to stay at Barcelona, but the club is only willing to extend his loan for another year rather than pay the transfer fee. City is eager to offload Cancelo to avoid his value decreasing with time. Arteta, who has previously signed players from City, may tempt Cancelo with a move to Arsenal in the summer.

Cancelo made 154 appearances for City, winning three Premier League titles and the Carabao Cup, before joining Barcelona and winning the La Liga title last year. He has played 32 games this season, starting 22 league matches.
