In the aftermath of Manchester United’s FA Cup quarterfinal match against Liverpool, eight fans were arrested, four from each team. Two United fans were arrested on suspicion of tragedy chanting, an offensive behavior towards Munich air disaster victims.
Other offenses included possession of drugs and pyrotechnics. Greater Manchester Police held a supporter group meeting with both sets of fans prior to the match, agreeing that tragedy chanting was unacceptable. The police have identified an individual United supporter who was filmed tragedy chanting in circulating social media footage and are working with both clubs to take action against them. No arrest has been made yet, but the arrests are hoped to act as a deterrent to anyone engaging in such behavior at future games.
