Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson is facing a race against time to be fit for the crucial title clash against Arsenal at the end of the month. The Brazilian keeper injured his thigh while conceding a penalty in the 1-1 draw against Liverpool on Sunday. Initial tests on Monday indicated that he will be out of action for three to four weeks, putting his availability for the Arsenal game on Easter Sunday in doubt.

The news is also a blow for Ederson’s international hopes, as he will miss Brazil’s friendly against England at Wembley. With Liverpool’s Alisson also injured, these matches were seen as an opportunity for Ederson to stake a claim for the starting spot. In Ederson’s absence, Pep Guardiola will turn to second-choice goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, who impressed after replacing Ederson at Anfield. Ortega is keen to be a number one again and is expected to hold talks over his future at the Etihad in the summer.

Guardiola expressed full faith in Ortega, praising his performance against Liverpool. Despite Ederson’s efforts to continue playing after receiving treatment, he was only able to last six minutes, highlighting the severity of his injury. Guardiola will hope to have Ederson back for the Champions League quarter-finals a week later.
