Two long-standing rivals clashed at the Etihad Stadium last Sunday, as City, hopeful for the Premier League title, emerged victorious with a 3-1 win. Phil Foden scored twice, while Erling Haaland netted his 28th goal of the season.

During the match, a video surfaced showing a spectator allegedly making provocative gestures towards United supporters. The individual’s actions, which involved spreading his arms in a manner resembling an airplane, are believed to reference the tragic Munich air disaster of 1958, which claimed 23 lives.

The Greater Manchester Police have confirmed the arrest of a man. According to a statement from a GMP spokesperson to The Athletic, “During the Manchester derby, officers arrested a man on suspicion of tragedy chanting. Following reports made in the crowd, the man was promptly arrested by our officers.”

The incident occurred in 2023 after a petition, garnering over 17,000 signatures within a week, called for chanting about tragedies at football matches to be deemed a criminal offense. The UK government affirmed its commitment to addressing harmful behaviors at football games, citing the existing legislation under the Public Order Act 1986. This law empowers authorities to prosecute individuals who engage in threatening, abusive, or insulting language or behavior that causes harassment, alarm, or distress, particularly in the context of chanting about tragedies or death at football matches.
