Xhaka has played a pivotal role in Leverkusen’s extraordinary undefeated march towards their first-ever Bundesliga title this season. Die Werkself comfortably lead the standings, well ahead of Bayern Munich in second place. However, the Swiss midfielder remains cautious of a late-season collapse, reminiscent of his experience last season with Arsenal. The Gunners squandered a substantial lead, allowing Manchester City to seize the title.

In an interview with ESPN following their 2-0 victory over 10-man Koln, Xhaka emphasized the need for caution, stating, “We should be proud of our position but nothing is won yet – I am speaking from my own experience of last season [at Arsenal]. We had a similar points advantage over the team in second and we did not win the league, so I know this experience and I have shared it with the dressing room. Ten points is a lot when you have 10 games left, but there are still 30 points left to take so it is not over.”

Arsenal had led Manchester City by eight points during the 2022-23 season before collapsing towards the end. Despite spending 248 days at the top of the table, they failed to clinch the title, marking a Premier League record.

Understandably, Xhaka is determined to avoid history repeating itself. Leverkusen’s victory over Koln extended their lead to 10 points after Bayern’s draw with Freiburg on Friday. Manager Xabi Alonso’s success has attracted attention from clubs like Liverpool and Bayern.

Remaining unbeaten this season, Leverkusen is still competing on multiple fronts and will shift focus to the Europa League midweek. They face a challenging journey to Azerbaijan to take on Qarabag in the first leg of the round of 16.
