De Gea, having departed Manchester United during the summer, remains unattached as a free agent. Despite spending a challenging season on the sidelines without securing a new club for the past nine months, he has now caught the attention of Barcelona, as reported by Mundo Deportivo. The financially strained Catalan club is considering a potential “strategic” free transfer to enhance their goalkeeping options.

Barcelona’s primary goalkeeper is currently Marc-Andre ter Stegen, and any potential acquisition of De Gea would position him as a backup to the German. While De Gea is reportedly interested in returning to Spain, it remains uncertain whether he would accept a secondary role. In the interim, La Masia product Inaki Pena has filled in for Ter Stegen during the summer but faced challenges during the German’s absence earlier in the season due to injury. Pena might contemplate a move elsewhere in the summer to secure more consistent playing time.

Ter Stegen equaled the La Liga record for clean sheets last season, registering 26 clean sheets in 38 matches, contributing significantly to Barcelona’s title triumph.

De Gea has provided little insight into his future, which grows increasingly uncertain the longer he remains without a club. The seasoned goalkeeper has been linked with various clubs, including Nottingham Forest and Saudi side Al-Shabab, since leaving Old Trafford. However, it remains unclear where, or even if, he will return to top-level football next season.
