Kevin Nolan, West Ham’s assistant coach, had to be restrained from Brentford striker Neal Maupay during a heated moment in West Ham’s 4-2 victory over Brentford. The incident occurred just after half-time as the teams were returning to the pitch, with West Ham leading 2-1. While there was no physical altercation, Nolan could be seen confronting Maupay, who appeared to be laughing.
Brentford defender Mathias Jorgensen intervened and pushed Maupay away from Nolan. The cause of the confrontation was not immediately clear, but Gary Neville suggested on Sky Sports commentary that Nolan may have been offended by Maupay’s presence outside the referees’ room at half-time. Nolan had already been involved in a dispute during the first half, arguing with members of the Brentford bench after a penalty appeal was denied.
Despite the off-field drama, West Ham emerged victorious, securing their first win of 2024. Maupay is known for his on-field antics, having previously unsettled opponents with his behavior. Earlier in the season, he mimicked Tottenham’s James Maddison’s celebration and was also seen engaging in a verbal exchange with Manchester City’s Kyle Walker, as interpreted by a lip reader.
