Derby County, currently second in League One, have bolstered their squad by signing veteran striker Dwight Gayle until the end of the season. The 34-year-old, a free agent after leaving Stoke City, is expected to provide the goals needed to secure promotion to the Championship. Gayle, who started his career in the Arsenal academy, gained prominence at Dagenham & Redbridge before moving to Crystal Palace in 2013.
He has scored 147 goals in 389 career appearances, including 34 goals during his time at Newcastle United. Despite being a regular starter at Stoke City last season, Gayle fell out of favor under Stephen Schumacher, making only ten league appearances this season. His last game for Stoke was on January 1 in a goalless draw against Ipswich Town.
Derby is currently six points behind League One leaders Portsmouth, with a game in hand. However, Bolton is close behind in third place, three points behind Derby with two games in hand. With Gayle’s addition, Derby hopes to secure a return to the Championship after their relegation in 2022 under Wayne Rooney.
