Brentford has completed the signing of Brazilian forward Igor Thiago, signaling a potential departure for Ivan Toney. Thiago, 22, joins the Bees on a five-year deal with an option for a further year but will remain with Club Brugge for the rest of the season. The 6ft 2in striker has impressed in Belgium, scoring 16 goals in the Pro League and adding ten more in other competitions. The reported fee for Thiago is around £30 million.

Brentford manager Thomas Frank expressed his delight at the signing, praising Thiago’s qualities as a striker. Frank highlighted Thiago’s work rate, pressing ability, physical presence, and link-up play as key attributes that fit Brentford’s style of play. The move is seen as proactive by the club, addressing a key position ahead of any potential departure of star striker Ivan Toney. Toney, who recently returned to the Premier League after serving a betting ban, has been in fine form, scoring three goals in four matches.

Speculation has linked Toney with moves to top Premier League clubs such as Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United. Brentford fans have reacted positively to the Thiago signing, seeing it as a smart move to replace Toney if he leaves. In a cheeky interview, Toney joked about his manager not wanting him following Brentford’s 2-0 win over Wolves, adding to the uncertainty surrounding his future at the club.
