Exploring Roma’s unlikelihood to secure Lukaku permanently from Chelsea

Romelu Lukaku's return to Serie A with Roma saw a strong start to the 2023-24 season, but his goal-scoring form has declined since October.

Despite initially making a powerful impact upon his return to Serie A at the commencement of the 2023-24 season, Romelu Lukaku’s goal-scoring prowess has shown signs of decline. Nonetheless, this isn’t the sole factor contributing to Roma’s purported reluctance to convert Lukaku’s loan agreement from Chelsea into a permanent deal this upcoming summer, as per reports.

Following a tumultuous transfer saga involving Chelsea, Inter, Juventus, and Roma last summer, Lukaku found himself at the Stadio Olimpico for the 2023-24 season. He made an immediate impact, netting seven goals in his first seven matches across all competitions, including five in Serie A and two in the Europa League.

However, Lukaku’s goal-scoring statistics have diminished since October, with only eight goals in his last 21 appearances. Particularly in the league, he has managed just four goals in his last 15 outings. Despite remaining a valuable asset for coach Daniele De Rossi’s squad, the reported hefty price tag suggests that Roma is unlikely to secure Lukaku permanently from Chelsea in the summer.

Reports suggest that Roma would need to fork out a €43m fee to Chelsea for Lukaku’s signature, a financial burden that seems insurmountable given the Giallorossi’s transfer market constraints, necessitating the sale of current players beforehand.

Moreover, Roma still retains Tammy Abraham in their roster, who is expected to return from a prolonged knee injury approximately a month from now, as per reports from Calciomercato.com. Abraham sustained the injury in Roma’s penultimate game of the 2022-23 season and was previously anticipated to make a high-profile return to the Premier League last summer. However, circumstances have since evolved.

Calciomercato suggests that Roma might opt to utilize their own striker upon his full recovery, thereby complicating Lukaku’s potential permanent acquisition.
