Recent reports suggest that Roma harbours concerns over centre-back Chris Smalling encountering a setback in his recovery journey from injury. The former Manchester United defender reportedly experienced discomfort during training on Sunday morning, prompting fears of a new setback.

Since September, Smalling has been sidelined from all competitions due to an ongoing tendon issue. Despite being included as a substitute in Roma’s recent 4-2 defeat against league leaders Inter at the Stadio Olimpico, the 34-year-old remained on the bench at the discretion of manager Daniele De Rossi. This marked his first inclusion in the matchday squad since the 2-1 loss to Milan on September 9.

However, as per details from Il Corriere dello Sport, Smalling’s training session on Sunday was cut short due to discomfort he experienced during the drills. Although he participated in the warm-up and intended to engage in Roma’s tactical exercises, he withdrew from the pitch shortly thereafter.

The presence of heavy rain, resulting in a waterlogged training pitch at Trigoria, might have contributed to Smalling’s decision to end his training session prematurely. Il Corriere suggests that the adverse weather conditions could have posed an unnecessary risk to his recovery process.
