The US national team’s creative midfielder was in motion as the January transfer window closed. Borussia Dortmund made themselves available for offers, ultimately arranging a loan deal after extending the 21-year-old’s contract in Germany.

Reyna had garnered interest from various European clubs, including those in Italy and France. However, he opted for a challenge in the Premier League at the City Ground. This decision had ripple effects on other clubs, notably Cagliari, who failed to entice Antonin Barak from Fiorentina as they were outmanoeuvred in their pursuit of Reyna.

Nereo Bonato, Cagliari’s sporting director, disclosed to Radiolina’s Il Cagliari in Diretta: “At club level and with the boy [Barak], there were all the agreements. It was an operation that was also suitable on an economic level. There was [Genoa star Albert] Gudmundsson and Reyna who were Fiorentina’s two big targets and we had seen in the Viola managers the desire to get there at all costs. Unfortunately, Nottingham Forest made a higher offer for Reyna and Genoa preferred to keep Gudmundsson. We had to adapt to these choices.”

Reyna has now emulated his father, Claudio – a former midfielder for Manchester City and Sunderland – by moving to England. He debuted for Forest as a substitute in a 1-1 draw against Bournemouth and aims to make his home debut on Saturday as the Reds host Newcastle.
