Dani Alves Faces Trial For Alleged Rape: A Detailed Overview

Former Barcelona and Brazil football player Dani Alves is currently on trial in Spain, accused of raping a woman in a nightclub. The 40-year-old has been incarcerated without bail for over a year since the incident allegedly occurred in December 2022. Alves faces a potential prison sentence of up to 12 years if convicted. Initially denying any acquaintance with the accuser, Alves later admitted to consensual sexual activity.

The trial, which commenced on Monday, involves testimony from over 30 individuals, including Alves and his estranged wife. The court denied Alves’s request to suspend the trial, rejecting claims of prejudicial media coverage. The accuser, protected behind a screen, testified on the first day, alleging that Alves coerced her into a sexual encounter in a nightclub toilet. Additionally, her cousin and a friend testified, stating Alves had made advances towards them earlier.

Prosecutors seek a nine-year prison term and €150,000 in damages for the victim. Alves’s mother could also face prosecution for revealing the accuser’s identity on social media. Despite his decorated football career, including stints with Barcelona and Paris Saint Germain, Alves’s contract with Mexican side Pumas UNAM was terminated in January 2023.
