Barcelona and Nike have maintained a partnership for nearly 26 years; however, according to Spanish publication Sport, this long-standing agreement could soon come to an end. The renowned sportswear brand and the La Liga giants, who have faced public financial challenges in recent years, seem to be at a standstill, primarily due to financial considerations. Joan Laporta, the club’s president, is urging Nike to step up their contribution.

In a recent interview with RAC1, Laporta expressed his concerns, stating, “We have some concerns and a situation that is not what we wanted. The operation has been deteriorating, we think they have breached the contract.”

Regarding potential discussions with Puma, Laporta remained discreet, asserting, “Puma? Don’t mention names. We are talking to Nike. In times of difficulty, they have not shown themselves. In words, yes. When we have shown our teeth, they have made the effort but it is not enough.”

He emphasized the need to explore the best solution at this juncture. Laporta outlined three options: continuing with Nike, accepting market offers, or pursuing independent avenues through Barca Licensing & Merchandising (BLM).

Barcelona’s current agreement with Nike, signed in 2016 and extending until 2028, yields approximately £132.5 million ($167.5m) in revenue per season. However, given their financial predicament, Barcelona reportedly seeks a more favorable and lucrative arrangement, potentially involving Puma.

Negotiations between Nike and Barcelona are expected to persist off the field, while Puma remains a prospective alternative. Meanwhile, on the pitch, Barcelona prepares to host Granada in La Liga, aiming to narrow the gap with league leaders Real Madrid.
