The 31-year-old suffered a muscular injury during Egypt’s Africa Cup of Nations clash with Ghana, concluding in a 2-2 draw. The injury’s severity exceeded initial concerns, and upon his return to Liverpool on Wednesday, Salah is anticipated to undergo an intensive rehabilitation regimen. Even if Egypt progresses to the final in this AFCON edition, it seems highly improbable that Salah will participate, as he might require a month to regain peak fitness.

Liverpool’s assistant manager, Pep Lijnders, addressed Salah’s injury, describing it as a “proper tear in his hamstring.” The expected recovery period is three to four weeks if all progresses as planned, a certainty attributed to the meticulous treatment of Salah’s body.

Ahmed Hassan, Egypt’s record appearance-maker, raised questions about Salah’s commitment to the national team after his departure from the camp. Hassan insisted that Salah should have remained with his teammates, even if he could only stand on one leg. Lijnders defended Salah, emphasizing that the decision to bring him back to Anfield was solely for optimal medical care, highlighting Salah’s unwavering commitment to both club and country.

Despite Salah’s absence, he remains a crucial asset for Egypt’s AFCON aspirations, having narrowly missed winning the trophy in 2021, losing to Senegal in the final on penalties. As Salah observes from the sidelines, Liverpool faces Fulham and Norwich City in the EFL Cup and FA Cup, respectively, over the next five days. Furthermore, Salah’s absence is likely to impact key Premier League clashes against Chelsea and Arsenal. If his recovery goes according to plan, Salah may return to action against Brentford on February 17 or a week later against Luton Town at Anfield.
