Nkunku, who faced a knee issue sidelining him for the first half of the season, encountered a new setback during January training. Initially projected to be out for three weeks, there were reports suggesting an earlier return, but Chelsea has now officially confirmed that he is still in the process of “undergoing his rehabilitation program.”

During a press conference before the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Middlesbrough, head coach Mauricio Pochettino disclosed that Nkunku is unavailable, expressing disappointment. Pochettino explained that Nkunku suffered a minor setback in his hip, causing a delay in his return, clarifying that it’s not a major concern but has postponed the possibility of his availability.

The summer signing, valued at £52 million ($66m), has yet to make an appearance in 2024, missing matches against Preston, Middlesbrough, and Fulham. Pochettino further revealed that Nkunku’s fellow countryman, Gusto, is also on the treatment table, ruling him out for the clash with Boro. According to Nathan Gissing, Gusto’s absence is attributed to muscle overload and is not considered a severe issue.

With 10 first-team players unavailable for the second leg, including captain Reece James, Romeo Lavia, and Wesley Fofana, Chelsea faces challenges. Additionally, returning loanee Cesare Casadei is cup-tied. Despite the setbacks, Chelsea aims to overturn a 1-0 aggregate deficit against Middlesbrough, recognizing the Carabao Cup as a crucial opportunity for silverware. Liverpool is the likely opponent in the Wembley final. Nkunku aspires to return to training before the significant league encounter with Aston Villa on Friday night.
