The current English champions, who celebrated a remarkable Treble victory in the 2022-23 season, are cognizant of facing significant scrutiny off the pitch. In 2023, revelations emerged that City’s financial activities would undergo a thorough examination as part of a five-year investigation, encompassing charges dating back to 2009.

Several other Premier League clubs, including Everton, have already experienced the sting of Financial Fair Play (FFP) penalties, with Everton receiving a 10-point deduction this season. Everton, along with Nottingham Forest, is now gearing up for another legal battle as they find themselves under investigation once again, prompting questions from supporters at Goodison Park, the City Ground, and beyond Merseyside and the East Midlands. There is a perception that their cases are being expedited ahead of the rule changes set for August 2024, while clubs like City and Chelsea seemingly have the leeway to spend without immediate repercussions.

Premier League CEO Richard Masters has addressed this concern, expressing understanding of the frustration felt by Everton and Forest fans. However, regarding City’s case, he has refrained from disclosing the specific date of their impending scrutiny, stating, “There is a date but I can’t tell you when it is.”

Should City be found guilty of violating or bending the rules, a range of sanctions could be imposed. Historically, fines and points deductions have been the typical outcomes, potentially jeopardizing Pep Guardiola’s team’s chances in future domestic title pursuits.
