According to The Sun, Manchester United attempted to secure Hjulmand, offering Pellistri as part of the deal, but Sporting turned down the proposal. Hjulmand, a 24-year-old Denmark international, holds a £69m release clause in his contract, a figure Sporting hopes to activate.
Reportedly, Hjulmand sees Christian Eriksen as a mentor and recently joined Sporting from Serie A’s Lecce. He has a contract with Sporting until 2028, meaning the club isn’t pressured to sell. Meanwhile, Pellistri, who has featured in 14 games for Erik ten Hag’s team, is also linked with PSV.
Sporting acquired Hjulmand for around £15m ($19m), and he’s been a regular in their lineup this season. Previously associated with Southampton during his Lecce days, he chose a move to Portugal instead.
Whether United will match Hjulmand’s release clause this month remains uncertain. A deal at £69m seems more feasible in the summer due to the considerable cost. Hjulmand is expected to return to action for Sporting’s match against Chaves in the Primeira Liga on Saturday.
