Gary McAllister, a former Liverpool star, has urged the Reds to make a bold move in the transfer market by pursuing Kylian Mbappe.
Mbappe, aged 25, finds himself in the last six months of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain. Recent reports indicate that the French sensation has agreed to forgo a £69 million loyalty bonus if he opts to leave the club this summer. Despite PSG expecting him to extend his contract, Mbappe has chosen to stay at Parc des Princes for the 2023-24 season, reportedly expecting 80 million euros for his services.
European sources suggest that Liverpool are now leading the race to acquire the services of the French national team captain. McAllister, a former midfielder for the Reds who secured FA Cup and UEFA Cup triumphs during his tenure at Anfield, believes his old club should be actively pursuing Mbappe.
“I think clubs like Liverpool should always be there when a world superstar like Kylian Mbappe becomes available,” expressed McAllister in an interview with Boyle Sports. “If there’s an opportunity there, and if the Mbappe deal is in line with the budgets and how the club is run, then Liverpool should be interested as far as I’m concerned.”
McAllister, who later served as a coach at Liverpool, also feels that the 25-year-old forward would be an excellent fit for Jurgen Klopp’s high-energy attacking approach. He added, “The world’s top five or six clubs will always want to be involved when a player of that calibre becomes available, and Liverpool are a part of that group.”
”Over the last few years, people have been saying that Mbappe’s next step was Real Madrid, but the link with Liverpool has also been there. Liverpool were also in the picture when Jude Bellingham was available. I can’t see a reason why they couldn’t get Mbappe if the deal worked for them.”
Liverpool had previously engaged in discussions with Mbappe, who revealed in a 2022 interview with the Telegraph: “I talked to Liverpool because it’s the favourite club of my mum. I don’t know why, you will have to ask her! It’s a good club and we met them five years ago. When I was in Monaco I met them. It’s a big club.”
