It seems highly likely that Tony Mowbray will take the reins as Birmingham City’s new manager. He’s currently in discussions with the club, eyeing the role vacated by Wayne Rooney, who was let go after just two victories in 15 games. Mirror Sport first indicated Mowbray’s potential appointment, placing him near the top of the shortlist.

Negotiations for a contract are underway, and if terms align, the 60-year-old could assume the position by the weekend. Despite rejecting multiple offers since leaving Sunderland’s managerial post last month, Mowbray seems drawn to the idea of joining a club with stable ownership, aiming for an advanced style of play. His familiarity with the area from previous managerial stints at West Brom and Coventry adds to his appeal.

With vast Championship experience and a history of promoting teams to the Premier League during his time at the Hawthorns, Mowbray looks set to become Birmingham’s second manager since Tom Brady’s involvement as a minority owner and advisory board chairman.

Hoping for a more successful tenure than Rooney, who lasted a mere 83 days following a controversial appointment in October, Mowbray arrives amidst Birmingham’s dip from sixth to 20th in the Championship under John Eustace’s successor.

Garry Cook, Birmingham’s CEO, emphasized the commitment to bringing success to St Andrew’s after parting ways with Rooney, citing the need for a different direction. Although Mowbray might not oversee the FA Cup match against Hull on Saturday, interim manager Steve Spooner is preparing the team and has emphasized a fresh start.

Rooney, expressing understanding of the results-oriented nature of football, acknowledged that the allotted 13 weeks were insufficient to implement necessary changes. He plans to spend time with his family before seeking his next managerial opportunity.
