During Liverpool’s recent 4-2 victory over Newcastle in the Premier League, the team had to substitute the midfielder a minute earlier than planned due to his complaint about a hamstring sprain. Klopp has since disclosed that the captain of Hungary will be sidelined for the next two Liverpool matches, which includes the Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg match against Fulham, and there’s a possibility of a more prolonged absence.
Klopp clarified during his pre-Arsenal press conference, stating, “I can confirm it’s not a potential injury – it is an injury. Muscle, hamstring. But now we have to see,”
He added, “Dom is very positive, [and] doesn’t have a lot of pain but we have to wait a little bit. So, no chance obviously for Sunday, not for Wednesday. No. And then we will see, after that hopefully, he might be back but we don’t know.”
Szoboszlai has been a crucial player at Anfield, logging over 1,800 minutes on the field this season, second only to Mohamed Salah. His previous season at RB Leipzig also saw extensive playing time, surpassing 3,000 minutes. Despite Klopp’s efforts to rotate the squad, injuries to other players, combined with a demanding schedule, led Szoboszlai to start in seven out of nine games from December’s start until the Newcastle victory.
In Szoboszlai’s absence, midfield replacements for the upcoming Arsenal match could include Harvey Elliott and Ryan Gravenberch. His injury comes at a crucial time for Liverpool, with Mohamed Salah and Wataru Endo away on international duty for the AFCON and the Asian Cup, respectively.
