Confirming the news, United stated that Sergio Reguilon would be returning to Tottenham immediately. According to United, Reguilon served his purpose by covering for Shaw and Malacia during their injuries. With Shaw’s imminent return and Dalot’s versatility, opportunities for Reguilon to play would decrease in the second half of the season. Therefore, it was mutually agreed upon for Reguilon to go back to Spurs.
Reguilon had made 12 appearances during his time at United but with the defensive lineup nearly complete and fewer upcoming games, the decision was made to end his loan spell.
Initially eyeing Marc Cucurella, United turned to Reguilon due to complications with Cucurella’s cup-tied status. However, it was reported that United had always planned to trigger the break clause in Reguilon’s loan agreement.
With Reguilon only featuring for United this season, FIFA rules allow him to join another club during the transfer window. If Tottenham doesn’t see a role for him, they might seek alternative options.
