Erik ten Hag unveils reasoning behind Kobbie Mainoo’s unconventional substitution in Nottingham Forest showdown

During a match against Nottingham Forest, a young player started for Ten Hag's team but was substituted at half-time without any injury concerns, a tactical decision the manager defended.

The young player earned a spot in Ten Hag’s starting lineup against Nottingham Forest last Saturday but was substituted at half-time, with Scott McTominay taking his place in midfield. The United coach later clarified in a press briefing that Mainoo wasn’t injured; rather, his exit was a tactical choice, one he stands by without any regrets. This move puzzled both fans and experts as the teenager had been one of the team’s more promising performers.

Addressing reporters post-match, the Dutch manager elaborated on why McTominay was brought on instead of Mainoo for the second half. He remarked, “Scott [McTominay] brought energy, I think the second half was much better on our side. The first goal, when you analyse it well, has nothing to do with the midfield. The second goal came from poor communication.”

The Red Devils concluded 2023 on a disheartening note, suffering their ninth loss in the current Premier League campaign. Forest took the lead through Nicolas Dominguez’s goal in the 64th minute, momentarily equalized by Marcus Rashford, before Morgan Gibbs-White secured a memorable win for the hosts with an 82nd-minute winner.

Ten Hag’s squad kicks off the new year with an FA Cup third-round encounter against Wigan Athletic on January 8, followed by a league fixture against Tottenham on January 14, marking their first game of 2024.
