Serie A has discontinued its equivalent of the “Beckham Law” after discussions with the Italian government. The law, officially known as the Crescita Decree, provided a 50% tax discount for high-income foreign earners in Italy. Similar to Spain’s “Beckham Law,” it aimed to attract foreign footballers to the league, fostering competitiveness.
However, recent discussions in the Italian Council of Ministers have led to the abolishment of this tax benefit. The decision comes as a surprise to several Serie A clubs that relied on the law to attract top talents globally. AC Milan’s CEO, Giorgio Furlani, expressed concern, stating that ending the Crescita Decree would be detrimental to Italian football.
Lazio president Claudio Lotito emphasized the potential collapse of major teams like Milan, Juventus, and Roma due to the rule change. While some in football are alarmed by the impact on competitiveness, Italian politicians considered keeping the law in place as “immoral” during the Council of Ministers’ discussions.
