Ole Gunnar Solskjaer edges closer to a managerial comeback, with strong indications that he might take the helm at Besiktas, emerging as the frontrunner for the position previously occupied by Riza Calimbay, who was dismissed after just seven matches this season. Turkish reports suggest that Solskjaer has engaged in discussions with the club and is their preferred choice.

Besiktas, currently positioned fifth in their league, find themselves a significant 17 points adrift of Fenerbahce, prompting dissatisfaction among club officials due to what they perceive as a lack of spirited contention for both the league title and securing a spot in the Champions League.

Solskjaer, aged 50, has been without a managerial role since his departure from Manchester United midway through the 2021/22 season. Initially assuming temporary charge after Jose Mourinho’s exit, he spent three years in charge at Old Trafford. While he guided the team to a Europa League final and a second-place finish in the Premier League, skepticism surrounded his tenure, with critics alleging that his iconic status as a former United player influenced his appointment.

His dismissal came following a dire period during which his team conceded 15 goals in five league games, including a devastating 5-0 defeat at home to Liverpool. However, should he accept the position in Turkey, he’ll reunite with a player from his Manchester United days.

Eric Bailly, who was with the team during Solskjaer’s tenure but faced limitations due to form and fitness concerns, might find a new opportunity under his former boss. Loaned out to Marseille last season and later joining Besiktas, Bailly’s time at the club was disrupted when he and four others were removed from the squad due to “poor performance and incompatibility with the team,” leaving the Ivorian defender’s future uncertain.

With Bailly’s contract expiring at the end of the current campaign, a reunion with Solskjaer could potentially offer him a fresh start ahead of the January transfer window.
