Following a significant win for Super League advocates in European courts, Manchester United led the charge as the first Premier League club to firmly refuse rejoining a revamped European Super League (ESL). This decision came after the unveiling of new plans for a rebel three-tier structure, announced right after judges ruled that UEFA’s regulations against such a league contradicted EU law. Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, and Atletico Madrid echoed this sentiment, rejecting the breakaway competition in their respective statements.

United released an official statement affirming their unchanged stance: “Our position has not changed. We remain fully committed to participation in UEFA competitions, and to positive cooperation with UEFA, the Premier League, and fellow clubs through the ECA on the continued development of the European game.”

Bayern Munich’s CEO and ECA’s Vice-Chairman, Jan-Christian Dreesen, emphasized their dedication to national leagues and European football’s structure, reiterating their opposition to the Super League.

City, Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Liverpool similarly reiterated their commitment to UEFA competitions and working within established football structures, distancing themselves from the ESL.

PSG’s president, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, maintained their staunch opposition to the ESL, emphasizing support for the European Sports Model and collaboration with stakeholders for the benefit of fans and players.

The Premier League also reaffirmed its rejection of the ESL, highlighting the importance of fan support and the fundamental principles of open competition in domestic and international club tournaments.

Additionally, English club executives dismissed any potential future involvement in the ESL, citing the Football Governance Bill as a deterrent and expressing collective commitment to the Premier League’s regulations.

Despite the favourable ruling from the European court, the ESL faces continued opposition and a bleak outlook, particularly with support primarily from Real Madrid and Barcelona. The project, originally intended to rival the UEFA Champions League, encountered rapid backlash from fans, governments, and domestic leagues. The possibility of English teams engaging in such competitions remains slim, with indications of potential expulsion from English football if pursued against established regulations.
