Welch is poised to create a groundbreaking moment by officiating Burnley’s clash with Fulham at Craven Cottage on December 23rd. Earlier, she achieved a significant milestone as the first female fourth official in the world’s most-watched league.

In a previous fixture between Fulham and Manchester United in November, the pioneer collaborated with referee John Brooke and assistants Lee Betts and Matthew Wilkes.

Adding to her list of achievements, Welch was the inaugural woman to officiate an EFL match, managing Port Vale’s 2-0 triumph over Harrogate in 2021. The 40-year-old also boasts experience as a lineswoman in the Premier League.

This marks a monumental personal accomplishment for Welch, who embarked on her refereeing journey in 2010. Reportedly, she simultaneously held an administrative role in the NHS before transitioning to a full-time referee in 2019.

Welch’s selection by the PGMOL represents another significant stride forward and stands as a premier league first in its 31-year history. More history is in the making on Boxing Day.

Sam Allison will oversee a top-flight match in December, making him the Premier League’s first black referee in 15 years. He’ll officiate Sheffield United’s match against Fulham.

Uriah Rennie, the top flight’s last black referee, retired from officiating in English football’s top four divisions in 2009. Jarnail Singh, the EFL’s last non-white referee, retired in 2010.
