The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) has taken the unprecedented step of indefinitely suspending the Super Lig after Ankaragucu’s president, Faruk Koca, physically attacked referee Halil Umut Meler. The shocking incident occurred at Eryaman Stadium after Rizespor scored a late equalizer, prompting Koca to enter the pitch and punch the referee in the face during the post-match chaos. Meler left with a black eye and faced further aggression from Ankaragucu fans who invaded the field.

In response, the TFF condemned the “vile, inhumane” attack, asserting that it targeted not only Meler but all stakeholders in Turkish football. The federation vowed to mete out severe punishments to those involved, including the club, its chairman, and officials responsible for the assault. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced a detention order for Koca, with two individuals already apprehended as part of a judicial probe.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan denounced the violence, emphasizing that sports should embody peace and brotherhood. He pledged to prevent such incidents, stating, “We will never allow violence to take place in Turkish sports.” The suspension of matches across all leagues reflects the gravity of the situation, highlighting the imperative need to address and eradicate violence within the sport.
