According to Soccernet.ng, Paolo Maldini, the former Milan center-back and later technical director, criticized the Milan board for their summer transfers, calling it a squandering of funds.
Maldini, aged 56, wore the Rossoneri jersey over three decades before rejoining the club where he spent his entire footballing career as a technical director in 2018.
During his tenure as Sporting Director, Milan experienced a resurgence, regularly participating in the UEFA Champions League and clinching the Scudetto in 2022.
However, a year later, Milan surprisingly dismissed Maldini, raising eyebrows in the football world due to the club’s remarkable progress under his leadership as technical director.
In an exclusive interview with Repubblica, the Milan legend detailed the circumstances with the club’s management and criticized the summer transfers that brought Samuel Chukwueze, Luka Jovic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and Noah Okafor to the team, deeming it a waste of resources.
Maldini expressed his amusement at the discussion around the issue, stating that there was no need to disrupt the team’s dynamics by signing Loftus-Cheek, Pulisic, and Chukwueze. He emphasized that the approach to the transfer market in the past differed significantly from the recent one.
His dissatisfaction stemmed from the quality of the transfers in the window, especially considering their price tags. Chukwueze, who arrived from Villarreal for €30 million in July, had an impressive record with 13 goals and 11 assists for Villarreal the previous season.
However, since joining Milan, Chukwueze has only managed to score once, primarily playing second fiddle to former Chelsea player Christian Pulisic.
